I have no experience of Jewish text study. Is this for me?!

The answer is likely to be yes! In the previous years several people with very limited experience came and got a fantastic amount out of it. There will be several levels of Talmud study, with one group specifically geared to people in this position. We do prefer that you are able to read Hebrew, otherwise be prepared to work very hard. We realise that this is a tough ask for some people, it is just that without this baseline standard it is difficult to engage in meaningful text study.

I go to lots of Jewish study events. Will this be too basic for me?

We hope not! The Open Talmud Project is designed for people who are tired of one off shiurim/limmud sessions and want something more challenging and meaningful. We will have 3 levels of Talmud study, and different levels of chevruta within these, so everyone will be challenged.

I’m not Jewish. Can I still come?

Yes, anyone is welcome! The only proviso is the one outlined above that you need to be able, or willing to learn before the course, to read Hebrew. This is not as hard as it sounds, and there are online courses which offer this..

I would like to come but can’t afford the price. Can you help?

We don’t want to turn anyone away because of cost. At the same time we don’t have that much funding, and need to pay our teachers and hire venues, so the event can only go ahead if enough people do pay. If you’re in this position please contact us and we’ll try to help.

I’d like to come for only 1 or 2 days rather than all 4. Is this possible?

We’re strongly encouraging everyone to come for all 5 days. This is a course, therefore each day will build upon the last. We realise that the first 2 days are working days, but the leave you’d need to take is far less than if you went to study programmes in Israel such as Pardes and the Conservative Yeshiva. If its genuinely impossible for you to make all 5 days but still want to come then contact us and we’ll see what we can do.

Who organises the Open Talmud Project? Is there a denomination behind it?

The Open Talmud Project is a independent grassroots initiative, which reaches across the Jewish denominations and is not tied to any of them. It is being organised and run by a team of volunteers.
